has anyone had a good experience with this editing software? I am considering buying this, but can anyone give me some advice to maybe a different software? any help is appreciated.

Avid is state-of-the-art editing software. It is an excellent program, and it has a price to match.
What will you be editing? Will it be Hi- or Standard-Definition? How many cameras? Will you telecine/color-correct by yourself? What is your budget?
I use both Avid and Final Cut Pro (FCP for mid-point editing, Avid for final picture lock). FCP is a very good editing suite for the price if you already are on a Mac platform (it is an Apple product, not available for PC). If you are on PC and will stay there, I have heard very good things about Avid Xpress. It's Media Composer without the bells-and-whistles. Another option would be Adobe Premiere Pro, which I have used, and is very good - it is often referred to as a "poor man's Avid".
If you are on a Mac, I would have to recommend FCP. It's suite is pretty user-friendly (I think, although I have editing experience) and the suite, which is the only way you can buy it now, comes with pretty much everything you would need to get through post-production (although I haven't used them all, since we have in-house departments with their own software to do most of the jobs included in the FCP suite).
I have a mac but am leaning towards AMC becuase I am able to get a special "educational" price of $325 or something similar. The budget is low, but enough for this price. Also, I have a small amount of experience with FCP and liked it of course, but If I were to buy it it would be for the full price of 1500 or something similar.
so should I purchase the Avid considering this?
You can run MC on a Mac as well. At our studio, we run our Avids (Adrenaline/Nitris) on PCs, but when I learned, it was on a Mac.
If you can get MC for a couple hundred bucks, I'd say go for it.
I just looked it up (I thought you might have misplaced about two thousand dollars in your $325 quote) and you're right - Avid is selling MC to students for $300. That's a fantastic deal. Keep in mind that the price is for the software only. You'll be able to edit, but that's where you will end your project. You'll need to have your telecine/color correction done somewhere else, along with titles and final audio mixing and output (I don't do those things either - we have other departments for those aspects, which is my point). Still, $300 is a really, really good price for MC. I think we paid nearly $60, 000 for our first Avid suite.
I'm not sure what/if there is a student discount for FCP, but you might want to look into that as well. Remember, it's a full suite.
Are you looking to become an independent filmmaker, or do you just want to do some editing? Just want to edit - the MC deal is hard to beat. Indie filmmaker - you're gonna need more than just cutter software - might want to make room in the budget. I have some really good Top Ramen recipes.
