If German Fernandez breaks the National HS 3200m record at Arcadia Invitational this weekend will it be bigger news than the Flora London Marathon?
I think it will be unless Ryan Hall wins or is very close.

who's your audience? I couldn't care less about some high school kid...
Good point... but remember how big of a deal it was when Alan Webb ran 3:53 to break the HS record. Ever since then he's been the great American hope.
I agree that the story will probably not be as big as London if German breaks the record. But keep in mind that for a high schooler to break the national record would mean him being about 25 seconds faster than Ryan Hall was at his age. Obviously it's premature to predict but the prospects for a kid that fast are through-the-roof.

3:53 is MUCH MUCH better in comparison to breaking the 3200 record. College kids all the time runs 3ks at a faster pace than the HS 3200 record, yet hardly any of them get a mile as fast as 3:53. The 3200 record would have to be crushed for a runner to be considered as promising as Webb was
Yeah I thought about that as I posted it. Webb was only 3 seconds behind Hicham el Guerrouj when he ran 3:53, whereas German would be about 30 seconds behind a great elite performance.

Spoken like some college kid.
woah woah. they are talking about the 2 mile record of 8:36. So lets take a look at the world record of 7:20 for 3k equivalent to about 7:56. So AT WORST if he ties the record he will be 40 seconds off one of the best world records. Webbs 3:53 is 10 seconds off the world record for twice the distance an 8:36 is not toooooo far off the 353. Plus, 353 was in a professional race - the Arcadia performance is with a bunch of high schoolers so he would have to do A LOT of the work rather than knowing he would be able to sit and get dragged to it.
I definitely do not want to take anything away from Webbs record. He absolutely SMASHED the previous record. IF German even breaks the record, he would have to run sub 8:30 to even come close to breaking the record like Webb did, which would bring him even closer to an "elite" level performance.
My two cents is he won't break it, but he will run awfully fast.

The national 3200 record's not that big of a deal; I think it's only 8:41. I mean it's fast, but nowhere near the 2-mile record of 8:36.
Why didn't anybody look at their watch when Nelson went through 3200?
That's an old story. Arcadia is the biggest HS track meet because it's held in the middle of the Track and Field Capitol of the World, Southern California. The whole nation wants to know how their preps stack up. London just has a few elites and thousands of fatbods to cover the tab. There's not much of an audience for those few elites.
again, i believe they are running the full 2 miles for the invite tomorrow night. they have done that for quite a few years now...
So much for all the hype. It appears that German will not even be competing due to injury concern. ... atleast now we can all watch a great performance by America's best and not have to worry about missing anything.
Disappointing for sure, but there are still a ton of great races (Nobody would upstage Hall if he runs well).
Video and Photos from Arcadia are posted if interested.
