The pace at the beginning was quite modest (72 maybe 74), then picked up some when one of the MN guys (not Mead) picked it up a little. Then the Wisco guys started moving and suddenly there was a group of 11 that separated from the rest. They kept on pushing the pace and Eagon took a run to the front and the crowd roared and the Wisco guys started to take the top 4 or 5 with Mead the only one that could keep pace (and he had no trouble but they left the likes Lex Williams in their wake). With just over a lap to go Brandon Bethke exploded -- well really, it looked like Hassan Mead exploded with a hard acceleration that would have been really impressive if Bethke was running the last 200 2-3 seconds faster. BB is a beast and is in excellent shape.
Mile was about 4:45, 3k around 8:55. It really didn't string out much at all until well after the 3k (in fact, I think Eagon was sitting in dead last until close to that point).
Bethke's last 200m was incredibly impressive. Mead actually ran a strong last lap, too, putting distance between himself and the other Wisco guys, but Bethke made him look like a Sunday jogger. The surprising part was that was the first time in the race where Bethke looked like the likely winner. Someone in the crowd said 26 seconds for Bethke's last lap - I didn't time but wouldn't doubt it.
