I enjoy and respect the mid-packers; they're the ones who make it a running community, rather than a smattering of individuals. They're the balance to the elites whose existence shows me something to strive for.
As one poster pointed out, mid-packers are rarely high-mileage runners, at least in the way that term is used on this board. If you're running 80+ mpw, you'll at least be under 20 mins for the 5K, unless you're elderly-- of course, I know a couple of runners in their 60s who still consistently run sub-20 for the 5K.
The vast majority of us will end up as mid-packers eventually; after all, most people can't remain fanatics forever. I plan to spend the next ten years or so being a running fanatic, developing every last bit of whatever talent I have, but eventually it will have to make room for other priorities. Better to slide gracefully into being a mid-packer than to give it up altogether and become an ex-runner. Those, anyway, are my thoughts.
