If your kid is not running sub 10 min for 2 mi by his jr year in H.S. start ruling D1 out.

If your fishing for a scholarship, play football.
D-2 has the same amount of track scholarships as D-I....and they do the same thing...divide them up. It is pretty difficult to get a football scholarship....especially if you are a distance runner. My guess is that you couldn't even make the team.
Most colleges have a list of times that they consider for scholarship and walk ons....write to the coach at the schools you are interested in and ask for the list.
