OK, so I just finished my 4th marathon. And for the 4th time, I felt very comfortable through about 18 miles. Started to falter a bit between 8-22 and then absolutely rigged the last 4 miles. I had a goal pace of 6:45 or a finishing time of 2:56 -- I know this is a pretty modest goal for many people (male and female) on this site.
Well I did finally break 3 hrs, but only by the slimmest of margins: 2:59:40. Thus, the experience was a little less than satisfying. I mean, I've run 1:21 for a half-marathon relatively comfortably. I had a decent stretch of training, ate right, drank enough water, etc. I feel like I should be able to run at least 2:55. But last weekend, 2:55 might as well have been 2:25.
I know there aren't any easy answers for solving the marathon and I haven't provided very much detail. But does anyone have any advice on how to break through that wall at 20 miles?
Any thoughts appreciated.
