I would think hands down the Last World Cross Country Championship 12K race in Kenya.
World Cross is for sure the toughest race in the world to win.
I ran the 800m in track just one season, and compared to the 1600, 3200, and cross-country (2.5M and 5K), and 400m, I found that 800m was by far the event I hated most (but ironically my best event). In the worst case, I would throw-up afterwards, and I would cough non-stop for two days.
However, after running a few flat, normal street marathons, I've got a lot of respect for mountain marathons, like running up the Jungfrau in Switzerland, trail-ultra-marathons, and desert marathons. In Morocco, you can sign up for the Marathon des Sables, a 6-day, 230km marathon across the Sahara, while carrying all your own water, food, and camping gear. Maybe 800m isn't that bad after all.
