I know he did NOT win the NCAA 10K last spring, but there was some argument from people saying he could have won it had he just gone harder earlier, but because he underestimated Shadrack Songok (maybe rightly so coming into that race) he ran too easy for too long and lost to him in a kick.
Rupp has clearly run faster than him for 10K, and he also made the US team for worlds, placing second over a field that was clearly better than NCAA's and beating Ritz. Today, in his 3rd race of the season he barely loses to McDougal with both of them leaving Songok nearly 30 seconds back in a more grinding harder run effort in comparison to the hold to the last 1,000 of NCAA's in track.
I watched the race in Sacramento and thought it was a huge tactical error because Rupp looked so easy and lost purely due to finishing speed at the end of a light tempo run.
In one sense it worked because he was able to save enough to make a world championship team after a long season of long races, but in another sense I wonder if he doesn't wish he had that chance again to get his NCAA championship title after 3 2nd places.
I certainly believe that had he taken the pace down earlier last spring he would have put Songok at a 3rd place finish to he and McDougal.
Anyone else?
