Iona the favorite? What were you thinking? Good one.

C'mon. I picked Hall and Sell and Ritz (in that order) to win the Trials and Oregon to win CC. Does that make me a seer? I don't think so. And that is why sports are so much fun - to play and to watch. We just don't know.
Exactly, on paper and history (a few years back) maybe Iona wa steh favorite, but so was Ohio St over Illinios, I agree this is what makes sports great
Actually I didn't come up with the article but when I read it I agreed with the logic. I think Iona ran a great race but Oregon was the only one that responded to the slow opening pace. They deserved to win.
They run the race to see who is the best team and who will step up when it counts. Many were acting like Oregon was a lock to win which I think was the main point of the article was that a host of teams an argument could be made for.
But Oregon ran great.
Oregon wasn't a lock. But good piont.

The logic of just subtract last year's seniors? What about redshirts, injuries, young guys who make an immediate splash?
Well, nobody knew the Mercados would bust a big one. Without this, Iona very well may have taken it, as Oregons 6 and 7 bombed. If you projected what the Mecados would run based on the confrence results, Iona would have been a pretty good choice.

what about improvement? I think that's the biggest one.
I think ANY college team lucky enough to have both Mercado brothers can place well. Those guys are great long distance runners. Vin Lananna is a good coach, but those Mercados honestly would run well for anyone.
You, know while I was watching the race I was thinking about the preview the entire time. At first split, I think 5k Oregon was destroying, and you didn't even need a split check to see that. They had a ton up there! Then 5k confirmed they were indeed killing. I was thinking how foolish the Brojo's were going to seem after this. The suddenly, you start to see the Oregon pack think a little. 8k comes and Iona has moved up a LOT. Suddenly brojo's begin to look super smart. No doubt they did have some valid points in their look at it. I mean their depth was great but Oregon's spread had certainly been poor.
Obviously the end of the day Oregon won the race by quite a bit. But still the Brojo's went out on a limb and called it like a lot of people probably should have seen it. Really not bad. Had they been right.........
