before this begins, one should REALLY define what you are measuring. There are "pullups", "chinups," and there are different definitions of each depending on who you are talking to.
One should ONLY count FULL HANG pull/chin-ups, i.e., going all the way down to a full hang(ZERO bend in elbows, completely straight arms), with a full pause, and then all the back up. If you do something else, it is still respectable, but just different and easier. Let's measure the same thing. By the same token, how far up? I've seen people pull to their chest (nipples), some to their collar bones, and some point their chin to the sky are only really pulling to what would be eye level if they were not tilting their neck.
See all the variables. One should go all the way down, and (I'll be easy here), at least up to their chins slightly above the bar.
So NOW how many did you do? (and did you use palms-facing-towards-you or palms-facing-away grip?? Another difference. Palms forward uses more biceps and is a little easier).

I meant to write: "palms facing TOWARD YOU is a little easier"

So, before I became a skinny runner-dude, I was a fat baseball dude (Div-1A scholarship). And before THAT, I was a SKINNY baseball dude (that takes me back to 10th grade).
I don't remember any of my gym records, but I do remember doing 20 pull-ups (palms facing forward, not backward/chin-ups) with 20lbs strapped around my waist. I was 5'10" 150lbs and 15 yoa. I couldn't do that today with 20lbs taken AWAY from my current weight (I'm 6'1" 165lbs 35 yoa).
Here's one for you I set 2 years ago: my current record for side bridges (lift, hold 1 second, then lower) is 265 per side w/out rest. I was in intense pain the next day every time I'd cough/sneeze/laugh, but it was worth it!
This thread is stupid. People will lie, first of all. And second, everyone's definition of a pull up (grip notwithstanding....that's not debatable, a pull up is with palms facing away from you) differs. Many people will swing, some won't go up far enough, some won't go down far enough. The majority of people I've ever seen do pull ups do them incorrectly.
Age 24, height 6'3, weight 188.
20 palms away, with pretty good form. 225 bench and sub-15 5k, woohoo.
You're a chic? Wowzers.
Only 7 completely correct. That sh*T is hard.

What grade do you lead? With 25 pullups I'm guessing atleast 5.12B.
Bullshit to the guy claiming to have done 20 pullups with 20 pounds strapped to him as a skinny tenth grader. You're mis-remembering some part of that story. Whether it be the weight, the reps, or both.
I agree that there has to be a uniform system being used. Even withthat in place, people will still lie or do them wrong.

now hold on, you weighed almost 190 when you went sub 15 5k? (and di that amount of pull-ups?) somehow I doubt it. And if you weighed a lot less then, but weigh 190 NOW....um, that really doens't pertain to anything.
( and I like how we have another 190lb guy who went for a lot of pullups too on this thread. 190lbs ? Guys, in case you didn't notice this is a distance runners forum, why are you hanging out here? 'cause if you really weigh that much you can't be serious distance runners [hell, you're a little heavy to be 400 runners. What does wariner weigh? 165? What did MJ weigh ? 175 ? 190, r u for real? Again, I'm sorry, but I doubt you weighed that much when you went sub 15:00. And if you really did, for the love of christ lose 20 lbs)

I didn't say I weighed that much when I went sub-15, that's just what I weigh now. And I can do more pullups now than ever (could probably max more than 20, that was a while ago).
Actually to me it's more impressive for a lighter person to do a lot of pullups than a heavier one, since the extra carrying weight you have is more than compensated for by the extra strength.
And actually, 190 is not that much for someone who is 6'3. I never would have thought this 30 pounds ago, but I still look pretty skinny at 190.
At Mt. Sac on Friday, the national guard was there with a pull up contest. I didn't try it tho. I'm weak, I can maybe do like 3
