I come from a pretty wealthy state where all the roads are in good condition, there's wide shoulders on highways, and plenty of sidewalks all over. There wasn't a lot of trails, but there were enough bike paths etc that you could make a lot of good running routes. I came to a school in a poor state, and they told me the training was pretty good here (they'll tell you anything on your visit), and I thought it'd be okay. Now that I've been here a while all I have to say is damn this place sucks for running. There're hardly any sidewalks and the town is kind of compact so there's a ton of traffic, so running through town is nearly impossible. We don't have any trail systems either so every day we just go out and run a county road. Seriously, there's only two loops we ever do, and one is pretty short so in order to get in your mileage you have to do multiple loops or add on an out and back of the other loop. I usually enjoy running a specific route pretty often, but the constant repetition of these boring loops is starting to wear on me.
Does anyone else train in a crappy place? How do you deal with it? I know this sounds a little dumb, but 10 miles of the same county road every day for 3 months is pretty boring. Help?
