From what I have heard, most high school runners run anywhere from 30-60. I am well aware that there are high schoolers running 80+, but its probably not the norm. BUt running 15-20 miles a week isn't going to get a runner anywhere near their potential. The important thing is to work up to mileage, but anybody should be able to start with at least 35-40 and work up from there.
your coach should not be coaching HS with ideas like this. Average is around 50 with steady progress to 70mpw.This low mileage will not win races tell him! Hes not doing you any favours afraid.Talk tactics with him quick.

more is better. perhaps coach meant 15 to 20 miles per day. that's what it takes.
