Maybe moving to LA for a job. Besides the obvious smog concerns, how's the running there? Where are the best places to live?

Smog's not too big of a deal since you won't want to run when it's that hot anyway. There are lots of trails and such but they can take a little work to access. If you just pick a random spot to live, chances are you'll have nothing but concrete when running from home. Los Feliz is a decent area close to Griffith Park. La Canada is probably as good as it gets for running (JPL trails go forever) but it's mostly high priced, single family homes. Lots of young people live in West LA but it's a pretty poor location for running. Most people have to strike a compromise between running on concrete sidewalks from their door and driving to some really fantastic trails when they get the chance.

That depends on what you do, where you work and how much $$$ you make. LA is HUGE, and there are some pockets with decent places to run. IMHO, the farther inland you go, the worse off you are. Check out trails in the Santa Monica mountains, Griffith Park, Will Rogers Park, the horse trails in Palos Verdes, the strand (from Redondo to Palisades), green belt from Hermosa to Manhattan Beach, San Vicente Blvd, etc.
Agree with above that LA is simply huge and you'll want to drive around to find some good trails, otherwise it's all roads, mostly without bike lanes. I used to run Sepulveda and with cars doing about 70mph it's a bit too close for comfort. I recommend Santa Monica Mtns and Angeles Crest.
