Eight years is the commonly given figure but for Carlos Lopes it was closer to 20 years I think.
I started training for my big race next weekend in 1983.
I was thinking more on a microcosmic scale. Like if I started this base cycle tomorrow would I race best in November, January, March?
There wouldn't be any such thing as a "perfect" training cycle. Perhaps "optimal" is a better choice of word. I don't think there are any clear-cut answers, but to peak for a major race you'd want at least 3-4 months of base-building, 4-6 weeks of hills or threshold type work, and a freshening/sharpening period of reduced volume and very specific work. That's a very basic general overview.
In terms of peaking in a career, that won't happen until after many years of moderate to high mileage and intelligent training.
It's not easy to get right, and I've heard a lot of stories about athletes in fitness-based sports (rowing, swimming, cycling, running) actually having their best years in the year following an Olympic or World Championship year due to working so hard in the build up during the previous year giving them such a great base of fitness.
