Lorimer St in Williamsburg. You know, Brooklyn. Outer boroughs. You have to leave the little island of civilization and venture out into the wilderness. Bring your bear repellent and water purification tablets.
But they do roast a mighty fine bean. First had 'em in Ithaca where the not-yet-ex went to massage school. Right up there with the best beans I've enjoyed in NYC.
Which include another Brooklyn entity who've been around since the Indians were fighting dinosaurs in present-day Sunset Park: Gillies (http://www.gilliescoffee.com/). Don Schoenholt is the guy, more than anyone, behind America's interest in something a little better than Folgers. F'rinstance he turned a handful of Seattle roasters on to the good stuff and the rest is history.
Peet's (at the cafe, not store bought) is arguably better my friend. Also Moonstruck coffee is superb.
