We just got a new HD tv with a built in tuner. I saw another thread discussing this and wanted to get a bit more information. Thanks for any help.

The HD signal is transmitted over UHF, so any old VHF/UHF antenna will work. If you live in a metropolitan area without any tall buildings, you can easily use a set-top antenna. Tall buildings will create ghosting (interference of signals), and ghosting will cause your HD signal to be "blocky". Be aware, though, that some Internet sites will sell you some kind on new-fangled, futuristic looking antenna claiming it if for "High Definition". Don't spend more than $20; it's just a cheap UHF antenna.
For what it's worth, I am using a Terk AM/FM/VHF indoor antenna that I got for my stereo. I have it behind the HDTV, and get decent reception. I live in suburbs of Los Angeles. I recently purchased, but have not installed yet, an amplified outdoor HDTV antenna to integrate with my DirecTV. It was $31 on eBay, and includes mounting bracket and pole, and will run on the power that goes through the DirecTV lines. I'll use $2 diplexors on each end, one to get the UHF signal into the DirecTV line, and another to get it back out at the TV end.
