Charles Barkley is not an announcer, he's a commentator.
Ovett is pretty good. Very very few former track athletes out there that are.
Duh.....the question was - who is the best commentator, not announcer.
Johnny Mac
Cliff Drysdale is a damn good commentator. I always look forward to hearing his voice during Wimbledon especially.
Also, I "completely and utterly" agree with whoever said Paul Sherwen.
steve cram is superb- knowledgable, informative, enthusiastic and goes into great detail- Brenden Foster hopeless!
Andrew Carlson is by far the best.
Bill Walton gets my vote!
Steve Kerr. I will miss his TV analysis.

Totally agree...he's gone on to bigger and better things as GM of the Suns.

I don't know the best but he would probably be British.
British commentators are much better than American commentators.
I was going to say the same thing. Something about their accents make the event seem more intriging to me for some reason, and they probably are more knowledgeable.
To the guy who said Joe Morgan, man, I hope you were joking. You must know there is an entire site devoted to bad sports journalism and commentating, named in his honor.
www.firejoemorgan.comYeah Morgan and McCarver are disgraces. Read Simmons' book. Brandon Arroyo? As for track guys, the two Golden League guys are great. I think Stuart was a coach. Hutchings is great and a former athlete. Cram and Ovett are both good as well.
For Basketball, Kerr was good, Heinsohn's amusing, Reggie Miller is fine. Mark Jackson was great paired with wise ass Jeff Van Gundy. From old videos, I like Rick Barry. Boston guys Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers are better announcers than coaches/execs.
Baseball, seems to be like track, as in almost every one is a weak analyst.
Football, I think Dierdorf is very good.
Tennis, either McEnroe.
Golf, David Feherty(sp.)
Bob Varsha is more than okay and has the credibility of being a sub 2:20 marathoner.
Basketball - another one for Steve Kerr.
Another vote for Ovett. He Owns!
