My daughter was a junior in HS last year and in 3 seasons (xc, indoor, outdoor) we counted that she ran 41 races between early September and early June (9 months). That's just over a race a week. All of the xc races were 5K or 3 mile. In track, her number one event was the 3200. She did run the 1600 a few times. And I am counting the times she ran the 4x800.
A guy I work with has a daughter who runs in college. When I mentioned how much my daughter raced, he said his daughter does about half that in 3 seasons in college. I asked if that was because athletes double less in college, and he said not really. He claimed they just have fewer meets because at the collegiate level they have to travel more to get to meets.
I will also say that I don't think my daughter's coach is a hard ass about racing her too much. It just is what it is. I think my daughter handled it pretty well, although she seemed a little tired at the end of outdoor and did not do well at outdoor states.
But does it make sense that hs runners with less experience and less physical development do much more racing than college athletes? Does my anecdote represent the general situation in the U.S., or is it an anomaly? Thanks for any info from coaches out there.
