i think that is a given with a 3:46 mile. im doubting he'll even attempt it until 2009 though... unless he decides to go for it after the world championships this year.

all jokes aside, it's up to webb whether he wants to or not. he certainly has the ability to do so. but i see him doing an el-g and maybe running the 5000 at championship races as he gets older, but never running an all-out, paced race like this mile. so CAN he? yes he CAN. "Will he?" is an entirely different question. it certainly won't be anytime soon.
7:29 should be in the sights first.
Using the IAAF tables, his mile is 1242 on their point scale. Equivalents over 800m (1:42.67), 1,000m (2:13.64), 3,000m (7:29.62), 5,000m (12:53.98) and 10,000m (26:56.88). Considering he ran 27:33 for 10k (worth 1184), I'd wager averaging his 10k performance (1184) and his mile (1242) since the 5k is pretty squarely in the middle, I end up with an estimate of 1213, which converts to 13:01.80. He'd be pretty close in my book.
good analysis, I say. One of the major things I took away from that is how underrated Kennedy's 3,000 AR is. Webb should have his eye on the AR's from 1500-5000 in the coming 3 or 4 years.
He is faster than Moorcroft in his best year at 1500/mile and Moorcroft did 13:00.42.
But he is just off of where Aouita was at 1500/mile and he had a tough time breaking 13:00. It took him several concerted efforts.
However, people regularly break 13:00 now and Webb would have a lot of people to run with and people there right up to the end, making it much easier than it was for Aouita.
Webb's 8:23 2-mile is the exact pace for 13:00 flat. Maybe it was an off-day, but then again, he is concentrating on speed. I don't think he can break 13:00 right now.
Who the hell cares right now!? Screw the 5000. Alan has the fastest 1500 and mile times in the world this year, just broke the American Record, is 8th fastest miler ever, and also finally has an incredible kick. Why are we even talking about the 5000 right now?
