This link was posted in another thread regarding Rasmussen being kicked off the Danish National team, but I thought it deserved a thread of it's own.
In summary, an amateur mountain biker, and former friend of Rasmussen, alleges that he was tricked into smuggling bags of a blood doping-like substance from the US to Italy back in 2002 by Rasmussen himself. Rasmussen told his friend that he forgot a pair of cycling shoes and asked him to bring them to Italy with him. Someone dropped the shoe box off, and he opened it with the plan of storing the shoes in the luggage and discarding the box. Instead of shoes, he found several bags of a blood-like substance (read the article to get more info on what it was). He knew a friend who was a doctor and had him come over to find out what it was. The doctor confirmed it was a blood substition commonly used in animals and derived from cows blood. They both then opened the bags and emptied the contents down the drain. When he got to Italy, he confronted Rasmussen. Rasmussen became angry when he was told they contents were discarded, complaining about how much that stuff costs.
The occuser supposedly told VeloNews this about a year after it occurred, but insisted they not use anyones name, including Rasmussen. VeloNews sat on the story, since they had no other evidence, and no way of saying the names.
Now the former friend has come out, and the doctor he spoke with confirms the part of the story he was involved in.
Before this story, I was a big fan of Rasmussen. I can't say right now I definitely believe everything the person is saying, but having the doctor confirm his part makes it much stronger charge. It'll be interesting to see what the Tour does with this information, plus his cycling team Rabobank. There's no hard evidence here, so I can't see them outright dropping him, unless more evidence is shown.
