Good God, you called Husker Du emo?! May Bob Mould bash you upside the head with his Flying V!
Listen to anything off of Minor Threat's first album--nope, no emo there.
If you go back to most early American punk and hardcore, you can make the argument that it's intense, emotional music (except for the surfpunk stuff). That doesn't make it emo.
Would you call Social D emo? That's pretty intense, emotional, and often deals with failed love and loneliness.
X? Same story. And clearly not emo.
I see emo as being pretty disposable music, and I even like some of it (Thursday, Kill Hannah, 30 Seconds to Mars, Sugarcult). It just doesn't stick with me.
Surely people 20 years older than I was in the 80s didn't say that about Husker Du, or X, or Social D, or the 'Mats. :-)
When I was in 10th grade I wore a Get Up Kids shirt to skill three days a week. Something To Write Home About was one of three albums that changed my life.
Emo music is more than just songs about heartache and breaking up. Bands like SDRE and Mineral and Braid dealt with matters more about spirituality and feeling lost then just breaking up with cindy lho who.
The current crop of "emo" bands seem too forced and hollow, not at all the feeling I get with Texas or Promise Ring or the other bands that made up the late 90s.

of course not, cause the all suck now. In fact, its not even emo. Just sup par pop punk.
The game of competitive agreement is fun.
Thanks for beating me to the punch. I saw B. Mould play twice (once with Husker Du and once solo) and he would f'in die if he knew he was being referenced as a grandfather of emo music.
HUSKER DU, X, SOCIAL D, THE REPLACEMENTS, ETC ARE NOT F***ING EMO!
wow letsrun has reached a new low....
yeah they are, emo-boy.
According to most of your definitions, Johnny Cash was EMO.
That's true:
"I cut myself today
To see if I still feel..."
The Man in Black (Eyeliner) was truly emo.
actually, that's not entirely true about johnny cash and "hurt." "hurt" is a nine inch nails original and johnny cash is covering it.
now, back to the original posters question:
the get up kids - "overdue"
the shins - "new slang"
that should get you started.
another somewhat coincidental fact about the get up kids...
their first major album was titled "four minute mile."

Uh, I was being tongue-in-cheek.
