I had exactly the same question. Is the closing the author's poor attempt at a joke (that would be in poor taste even if it had been worded better)?

I agree with the both of you. Interesting way to end the article.

It's a British newspaper, most people who read The Independant are obviously British. Most British people would get that joke. It does not imply that Tyson is gay.

I think we all get it. The guys last name is another word for homosexual and the author of this piece has brilliantly created a cleaver and whitty pun by making this connection. Really not all that funny. Not because I find it offensive, because I don't. Just because it's the most obvious joke that could possibly be made and has thus been made every single time the name comes up. It was only mildly funny the first time, now it's just not funny at all. But go ahead with your smug sense of superiority and believe that the Brits are the only people on earth with the intelect to understand such high brow humor.

they were treated like rookies on the team and were asked to get the more established athletes their drinks, they refused and this what lead to the whole issue being published

i think what the author's saying is that the US sprinters were making fun of tyson because his last name was gay, and he was the only person in the village at that time with the last name gay.
