What do you think? I'm willing to bet that a majority of people who watch Track & Field on TV are indeed distance runners. I guess there is no real way to research this fully, but the way I figure it distance runners can "understand" really all of the track events. Where most sprinters (at least the ones I know of) don't have a clue what a good time is in a 800m on up, most distance runners know what it means to run a good time in the 100, 200, 400, etc. therefore we are able to watch all of the events and appreciate them all.
This is all based on my own personal assumptions and observational evidence from the other members on my track team. I never hear any sprinters chatting about watching the latest track meet on TV, whereas usually after a meet on TV me and my teammates like to discuss it.
What do you think? Is it more likely that distance runners are the main ones who watch Track on TV? I think a good way to experiment with this is to show a full distance race (5K or 10K) on TV and compare the ratings to another meet that shows only highlights of those races.
I could be way off base here, but just a thought....
