Yoann Diniz the French World 50km walk champion strode to a superb 18:35 time for 5000 track at a meet in Paris recently, and his under distance speed was most impressive, because he is a 50km walker.
His basic speed was about 6 minutes mile pace - walking! Many letsrun guys would have trouble keeping up with this phenomenon for more than a few laps, unless running hard.
The idea behind all these short races in the early season is to develop speed and rhythm, which will translate to speedier performances in the 20km/50km. It is all about rhythm, form and staying 'legal' in the walks, and walkers at that level are often 'borderline' to disqualification for 'lifting.'
His time is like a marathon runner being able to run 12:55 for 5000.
He will now have to decide which distance to concentrate on for Osaka - the 20km or 50km.
Diniz, a tall rangy ectomorph (1.85/65 kilos, 6.1/143), has modified his style the last couple of years to avoid being disqualified in races. His style is now more fluid and supple compared to his earlier days.
He is coached by former French superstar Denis Langlois. In the off season Diniz does a lot of mileage on the roads - up to 200km a week, and supplements this with gym work, stretching and some running sessions.
He is the pride of France and we wish him well for Osaka.
