Rupp deserved to get beaten and Vin deserves a scolding if he told him to run it this way. Here are the key points:
1) Rupp is only running 1 event the 10k so he does not need to worry about saving himeslef for anything.
2) He is the best 10k runner in the field. He decisively proved that a few weeks ago with 27:31 10k. 24 seconds better than anyone else in the NCAA field.
3) While possessing "ok" speed, Rupp has been outkicked numerous times in the past few years.
4) Rupp allows the pace to remain slow for the majority of the race allowing many more competitors to have a shot at winning then would otherwise be the case in a faster pace.
5) Rupp only narrowly lost after leading most of the way last year (or was it 2005?). Rupp is much, much stronger this year.
Taken all these points together I'm not sure why Rupp would sit back and let the pace dwindle and allow so many people to have a shot at it. If he runs up front and forces the pace I think he gets some help from the kid from BYU (as his best chance is a fast pace as well). Doesn't have to be blazing but keep it an honest 28:00 flat pace and that takes all but one or two guys out of the race. Then his "ok" speed will be enough as whoever is left, if anyone, would be just hanging on and not able to mount a serious last lap kick which Rupp would still have at 28:00 pace.
Was what happened Vin's plan? Salazar's? Rupps?
Rupps biggest advantage over the field is his strength and he gave that advantage away by letting the pace be slow. Not real bright racing.
