Hookers. A gift certificate for the local escort service is always nice.
Sorry, you said mature and I had a condition...
Seriously, anytime you can give cash is good. Next best is running gear, whether its 20% off or some such at the local running shop.
Barring that, a sports bag is cool.
Socks, hats, trophies, medals, plaques have no use. Find something the winners can use. Like a hooker, oops, sorry.

the winner has should have the choice to choose a prize. the prize choices should be:
1.$100 tab at the local gentlemen's club
2.$100 worth of bibles
3.$100 donation to a charity of any choice AND a free pair of shoes from the local shop.
everybody wins.
i would run this race.
One of my favorite races was put on at a winery. Team and overall got 3 bottles of wine. 2nd got 2; 3rd got 1. Can't tell you how I made it home after that race.

watches are a good prize
a keg would be a cool prize too
remember, though, cash is king
One of my most memorable racing souvenirs is a trophy where the pillars are made out of Budweiser cans!
Plastic guy at the top -> $
Marble with can -> I

Very big on the "cool" factor.
I'm sure that the guy making the trophies really enjoyed himself.
I am sorry. After looking at my original post there is some confusion.
1st, 2nd, and third overall male and female receive 200, 150, 100.
What I meant to ask was for age catergory prizes? We have provided gear in the past, nalgene like bottles with the name of the race on it, and community donations. The only issue with the donations is we have many people who come from outside of our community and if they win they may not be able to use the prizes such as gift cert for restaurants and stores. Thanks for the help again, just want to have the race continue to grow and draw people in for the professionalism of it.
Thanks,
Scott
As someone with too much crap in my life already, I'd suggest gift certificates to local restuaurants, or something like that. I think most people would rather have something that doesn't eventually end up in the garage for a decade before they just end up throwing it out.
The water bottle is nice as are perhaps a nice beer stein with the race logo on it. I ran a race in London, England on New Years Day this year and they gave out a travel mug to all finishers. It's a nice item since any prize such as a gift certificate would have had to be used within 24 hours of the race since I left on the 3rd.
An autographed photo of Patrick Dempsey...
The best prize for winning a road race that I have recieved yet was for a 4 miler I won in San Diego. I got to throw out the first pitch at the next weekends Padres game. Also got a bunch of autographed baseballs from the team. No money at all, but it was an awesome experience.
One race gave out sweatshirts with the race logo. I have two boxes of trophies in my basement, but would still love to win a big 20+ ounce beer mug with the race logo and place engraved or glazed on it. It's a trophy, but useful, and kind of macho for those who would prefer "admission to gents clubs". I hate all those gear prizes like water bottles-nobody needs them.
As a hooker, I can assure you everyone does not win. The last person I want to have sex with is some boney runner.
Hook me up with a bowler any day.
I second the idea of giving free beer.
The Leinenkugels (sp?) race in Okemos, Mich., back in the 1970s and 1980s was awesome as they imported a bunch of cases from Wisconsin and gave a case to winners.
so you lived in michigan and they imported beer from wisconsin? hmmm
leinenkugel is such a prize the wisconsonites dump it off on the michiganders.
I think the travel mugs are a great idea if the Patrick Dempsey picture isn't possible.
Hartel.
Gift certificate to local running store - enough to cover a pair of shoes.
If you have to give a discount instead, make it worth it, at least 50%, otherwise it's just a marketing promo for the store.
