Great post first timer but watch out NY runner might call you a Nike tool. And ask for eveidence that any other coach has ever been fired because the AD was influenced by boosters. Letsrun posters will state many many examples of football and baseball coaches who have been fired in result of booster unrest and then NY runner will call them Nike Tools.
That mofo is exactly right.
above is the commercial (also on another unrelated thread) of the redubbed UNE Ducks.
And yes, agreed.
Yes, the first two questions where jokes, I see you don't appriciate my humor b/c you are too touchy about a multinational corporation that has a small interest in running.
The AD fired Smith - duh. Who fired and hired the AD? I know the President, but think the UNE Boosters had something to do with it and Knight is a pretty major one. Also seems like Salazar had some of campaign to get Smith out - just rumor and speculation - its not gospel like every thing you'd expect to read on lrc.
Knight has given back, but he has also taken from the sport/society. I will get back to on net alturism/corporate crook statement.
As far as pulling funds out, Once you make a charitable donation, you don't have any control. If you make a pledge you are expected to honor it. If you gave a gift and maintained control - its not really giving.
I'd still like to see Knight get pissed and mount a campaign to boot the dean of the law school.
The bottom line is nothing goes on at Oregon that doesn't go on at other schools. Not saying it is 100% correct, but we are dealing with one of the most cutthroat operations (NCAA)in the world and here is one of the few lesser sports that is able to cash in on big sport-type perks.
And like most things the public thinks goes on but doesn't, there are WAY too many mouths and ears in an athletics department (I worked in one) and university for some of these supposed claims to be going on -- IE paying of athletes, etc. Take a look at ESPN.com. Every time a player gets in a fight or a DUI, there is a story. Do you not think if athletes were receiving all of these things you claim, and the track program had a unlimited fund it could tap into at any time with no one blinking an eye, people wouldn't bring it to light? And stop using UNE. It is gay.

Exactly, 2005 called and it wants the phrase back.

Baloney, name any other school that has a scholarship situation that even remotely approaches the "uniqueness" of the Rupp scholarship.
Tell us what is so unique about the Rupp scholarship?

UNLV
Miami
SMU
UTEP
NCAA schools currently on probation:
* Arizona State (through 2007)
* Baylor (through 2010)
* Fresno State (through 2010)
* Georgia (through 2008)
* Georgia Tech (through 2007)
* Iowa (through 2008)[4]
* Kansas (through 2009)
* Memphis (through 2007)
* Mississippi State (through 2008)
* Missouri (through 2007)
* Northern Illinois (through 2007)
* Ohio State (through 2009)
* Oklahoma (through 2008)
* South Carolina (through 2008)
* TCU (through 2007)
* Washington (through 2007)
I thought Rupp recieved $$$ for his running accomplishments?
Shouldn't he have lost eligiblity both from a competing stand point and scholarship?
Didn't his parents have to pay it back and that's why salad bar said they were impoverish?
I tried to go on the goducks site yesterday, but like Knight it had a meltdown.

1. The fact he lives 250 miles from campus
2. The fact he has a coach who is not in the employ of the school.
3. The fact that he does not have to be at Hayward Field at 3:00 pm daily to do the assigned workout THAT ALL THE OTHER DUCKS (including walk-ons) are required to do.
4. The fact that he would rather pace a club mate, rather than a team mate through a prestigious 10,000 where fast times are the norm.
5. The fact that there is no other athlete is NCAA history, definitely not a prominent one, who is given carte blanche to do HIS OWN THING.
Yeah, you're right, nothing unique there.

Dennis Miller called and wants his lame phrase back.
First if you are going to make a statement that is easily verifiable do it right because Eugene is no where near 250 mile away from Portland try 100 miles. Second I am pretty sure Rupp lives in Eugene, he no longer lives in Portland. Lots of schools have coaches who are not employed by the school they are called Vualunteer coaches. Many of the assistant coaches at schools that are less funded have to coach on this basis. At the school I ran track at both the pole vualt coach and the throws coaches were both vualunteer coaches not employed by the school. We only had one vualter and he was only coached by the vulaunteer coach. From whatg I have heard from freinds that are on the team Rupp currently practices with the team; this is second hand info so I cannot be sure, but I am gueesing your info is second hand as well unless you are on the team or regualarly hanf out at hayward and take attendance for the team. How do you know Lanana didnt want him to pace Goucher, Goucher is closer to his level than anyone on his team thus it may have just been a work out to get him ready for the 27:33 he ran weeks later. I am not able to argue point 5 as I am not familiar with all the NCAA athletes in the history of NCAA athletics. But I know there have been lots of basketball players who have played in European leagues then played inthe NCAA I also know there have neeb lots of olympic athletes who have been given special treatment then allowed to use collegiate eligibility. An example would be a sprinter on my college team she ran in the olympics and numerous other presitgious meets all over the world for the Bahamas. Then she cam and ran for my college team. She was past her prime but claimed to only be 20. And since she was so good but had already been running for years she was allowed to pick and choose workouts and what not because her body was always riddled with injury. I am pretty sure she was actually probably 30, but who knows.
I am sure there are many other athletes both American and foreign born who have competed in the NCAA after careereers else where.
Yup, typical letsrun as usual.
Nike gives money to U of O team-they suck theyre exploiting kids, Rupp sucks, Salazar sucks, Phil Knight is a kook, hate hate hate.
Lets say Nike were to reduce/limit their funding you know what everyone would say? Nike sucks, they don't support track, theyre all about the money, Basketball means more to them, bitch and moan bitch and moan.
Just give it a rest will ya?
1) I'm sorry, but you're not funny.
2) Obviously boosters can have influence on athletic situations if the AD allows them to. That's part of the reason why they contribute so much money and become boosters. This isn't some new evil practice that Knight has invented. Look at Kentucky and Tubby Smith. Boosters were calling for his firing since he got there. I have no idea what you are complaining about. And, Salazar probably did campaign to get Smith out. Famous alumni have every right to put there say into the matter. It's up to the AD to follow it or not. I still don't see what's so sinister here. - Side note: NY Runner, where did you go to school? Anyone that has gone/goes to a big name school understands how this works and wouldn't be surprised by it (For the record, I went to Illinois. We may not be the best in the Big 10, but we have a solid athletic program. Boosters have been threatening to stop giving to the school because we retired the chief...OH NO! Something sinister must be u!)
3) Again, we live in a capitalist society. Give and take is what it's all about man. Least he's given some. And when I was talking about giving, I wasn't just talking about track. As a previous poster mentioned he gave to the Stanford law school. Somehow I don't see that helping Nike's bottom line.
4) I didn't literally mean pulling funds as in taking money away. I mean that he doesn't have to give in the future if he doesn't want to, same with all boosters and alumni. As a booster, if he doesn't like what is going on he simply stops giving. There's no guarantee that any contributer will continue to contribute in the future. That's where his (and all donors) influence lies, not with what he has already given as much as what he can choose not to give in the future.
5) Still not funny.
- NY Runner (and people like him) go on with your conspiracy theories about how Phil Knight is doing so many things illegal and underhanded. There has been no evidence to show this. Seriously, give me news reports. Give me video. Give me something concrete and I will be more than willing to side with you. He's doing what thousands (this isn't hyperbole, literally THOUSANDS) of people across the country do every year, some on a smaller scale and some on just as big. Anyone that has gone to a school with an even moderately decent athletic program (or worked for a non-profit) would see that these actions are not uncommon, let alone illegal/wrong.

Right after you stop using gay in the pejorative. It is stupid and thoughtless.
Actually, gay meaning homosexual is more a pejorative than gay meaning 'lame'...to me. Obviously, determining what is pejorative or meliorative is entirely dependent on the individual's perception and cultural discourse.
Anyhoo, the real pejorative in question is NIKE. A once grassrooted movement, Bowerman supported, is now a scandalous, capitalist cow. I'm pretty sure they are going to HELL.
without the borderline stuff going on, do you realize how bad college track and field would be? Not just at Oregon, but everywhere. Getting Kenyans into school, snagging suspect kids from JC, allowing kids to compete despite some of them getting perks outside collegiate events. Cancel all that and you'd have a national list that wouldn't rival the NAIA. Why bash Rupp when the bottom line is in athletics, if you are good, you get perks. How often do you hear of top of the line DI basketball or football players being inelligable? Never. Third stringers, all of the time. It is a business and until you realize that, you'll end up being GAY and losing sleep over something that in the grand sceme of things makes your little GAY sport somewhat respectable.
Yea, track is so GAY compared with football, soccer, basketball, and baseball... sooo damn GAY. I mean Carl Lewis and Rupp aside, how many ring runners are rim jobbers?
