For my local paper, I'm covering a 10k race on the track where one of the runners is trying to hit the "A" standard for the World Championships this year (there is a thread on the message board about this race). To give "Joe Six Pack" an appreciation of how fast the "A" qualifying time is, I need to know what the average time for a 10k was in the U.S. for the past two years. The stats should NOT be derived from T&FN's rankings, but from a source which includes 10k road races, elite and "back of the pack runners" (I know there is a difference between a 10k on the track and 10k on the roads, but I'm writing for non-runners). For example, I would like to say something like "of the 1,000,000 people who ran a 10k in the U.S. last year, the average time was 43:45 or 7:00 minutes a mile. If possible, please include citations with your answer. Thanks for your help.
