If you want to go to a strong track program, consider this: Almost the entire PAC-10 conference is presently ranked in the Trackwire 25. But academically, Oregeon is almost dead last in their segment in the US News and World Report list of best colleges. The Arizona schools are also not that strong academically.
Stanford and Cal are among the best universities in the world. USC is ranked academically by US News with UCLA and Michigan and presently #2 in track by Trackwire on the mens side, but unless you are running 800 or shorter, you probably don't want to go there.
Not on the west coast, but one that should be mentioned to an east coaster is the University of Texas at Austin. One of the best public universities in the nation and also one of the best track programs....and if you don't get a track scholarship, it is probably the best bargain in education, especially to out-of-staters.
