Well, being fired and being laid off are two different things really.
I have never been fired, but I have moved around enough I guess. I don't really get into arguments with my superiors, maybe it is my field of work, I don't know.
Usually I am hired for my knowledge, and they want to utilize it. I did get into a huge argument with a co-worker one time, he was a moron and wanted to run the company into the ground.
I think knowing how to argue a point and remain professional is key.
I just don't get into personal issues at work.
If I find myself personally disliking someone, I am usually extra nice to them just so it doesn't get in the way.
When I was young, I worked as a bagger at a grocery store with some friends and we used to steal beer out of the back of the store. We would hide it under the loading dock and pick it up with the car after we got off of work.
One time I was still working, and my friend had just gotten off, and the manager started walking back there... I knew my friend was going to pick up his beer, and so I tried to stop the manager and stall him with a few questions.
He told me to wait one second, walked straight to the dock, heard my friend scooting cases out from under, fired him on the spot, and told him that if he ever showed his face in the store again that he would call the cops.
Afterwards, he called me into his "office" and asked if i had known about the beer. I said no, and he smiled and told me there were other ways of getting beer than stealing it from where you worked.
I didn't see it at the time, but this guy knew what we were doing the whole time, and was actually really cool about it. He could have had my friend arrested. Instead he just fired him, and never said anything else about it to any of us, even though he knew we were in on it.
