Figured I'd get a wide range of opinions here...
A friend of mine is convinced that I need to run the first 15 or so mile (downhill) at or slower than my goal pace (5:43). He insists that the proper strategy is to hold way back on all this downhill, running 5:43's or slower, and then have the confidence to plan on negative-splitting up the hills and into Boston.
My thought was that I need to take advantage of the downhill and put some time in the bank--currency to be spent up the hills and after (17-26). My feeling is that I WILL slow down a bit after the hills and I want to have just a little time in the bank--so, run 5:35-5:40 pace for 17, which is just under goal pace... putting some time in the bank but still holding back.
So the question is: run Goal pace for 17 miles and then maintain/negative split on the hills and the final 5 miles (this requires confidence and a leap of faith, but less risk of mashing the quads); or, put a bit of time in the bank (90-120 seconds) by taking advantage of the downhills (but run the risk of dying on the hills and the final 5 miles due to bashed quads).
I've heard different advice from different Boston vets. Thoughts?
