Amoung other things our mens team was instructed to leg lifts 20 x 160, side lunges, step- ups with 2 sets 20 x 20-30 lbs . our lift concluded with a 3 minute wall sit. This just seems to be a bit excessive on the legs.

What a complete waste of time. Unless you are really weak and prone to injury, your time would be much better spent actually, dare I say this, running...
If you do incorporate strength exercises, make sure they are running specific i.e. bounding, one legged squats, high knees, etc.
