I new a girl in HS that ran around 17 mpw and was a CA-state XC champ and was well under 5min as a soph. She had talent... But she doesn't run anymore...
I know one female NCAA 3000m champion who won it on 25mpw.
I've lived in central Illinois for the last couple of years and have watched her run at several races. She's been the subject of numerous articles all stating the same thing. That she does very limited training. The reporter wasn't punked. She's just incredibly talented I guess.
She must have gotten her genes from mom.
She treadmills another 60 miles a week but we all know that is really not running.
i know her, too.

I hate people who win on so little running. Think how good she could have been if she focused on running. I say give all to your sport or don't do it at all.

It sounds like she will focus on running only in college. Some coach might get VERY lucky. Starting out at 5:24 for second in state your first race....
What blows me away is- no coaching! And just "doing what her body feels like" at 5:30 in the morning! And it doesn't sound like she is exagerating, just has lots of energy. One wonders why she can't run, say 15 miles on the weekend to get some decent mileage....
In interviewed Katelyn last year, and she basically said she doesn't want to overemphasize running at this time in her life - it's just something she likes to do and is (obviously very) good at. Seemed to have a very healthy outlook on things; my guess is she'll go farther in college than some of these kids doing 50-70mpw as HSers - where are they gonna go in college, 100?

I heard she will be attending U of Illinois next year. Karen Harvey seems to have had some great success developing girls with boatloads of talent, and a girls a little short on talent.
