Who should get the nod for the national championship match up against the Buckeyes and why?
Who should get the nod for the national championship match up against the Buckeyes and why?
I'm a Florida fan but I'd have to give it to Michigan.
Michigan: 11-1 record, only loss was to Ohio State (12-0, #1 BCS, #1 AP) at OSU in front of over 100,000 in the "Horseshoe" by only 3 points
Florida: 12-1 record, only loss was to Auburn (10-2, #11 BCS, #11 AP) at Auburn by 10 points
I believe Florida had the #1 toughest schedule in the nation this year but Michigan was close behind at #3.
michigan and ohio state already played, and ohio state won... the gators, especially with their schedule, have earned their shot
no way they had 2nd hardest, they only played two ranked teams, Florida played 4
Florida
The subject of the following thread is a bit deceptive, but you will find several pages of this debate already taking place over here...
Also, gotta toss in there that Florida did win the SEC over a very good Arkansas team. Michigan, and fair or unfair this is just how it is, is still only second in the Big 10 - obviously because Ohio State is 1st.
Where it wasn't Michigans fault that they didn't have one more game to play, Florida did, and they won, and it was a championship in the toughest conference in the NCAA.
All this does is show yet again the need for a playoff system in NCAA football. I know that money and sponsorships has a lot to do with it but this is getting ridiculous. I heard a neat stat (don't know if it's for sure but will check it) from one of the two announcers during the Florida game (both of which sucked) that this is going to be the first time under the current system - although with the newly added national championship game I guess everything is in a new system - that I team would play itself into the championship game, rather than out of it, if Florida were to get the nod. That says something. That the system sucks.

Where are you getting your strength of schedule rankings from? Some SEC blowhard? USC had far more difficult schedules than both of those teams.
Gators obviously.
Look, For one: michigan had their chance...and lost. Maybve not by alot... but they lost.
Secondly: Florida is 13-1 in the toughest conference that ncaa has seen in 20 years. Arkansas-florida-auburn-tennesse-and lsu have been in the top ten... and florida lost only once then won the SEC Title... if they dont make it to the big game then the BCS needs to be sacked and we need to put names in a hat and draw to see who gets the National Championship Title each season...
Michigan.
As long as it isn't those little bastards from South Bend I am happy.
Michigan, and if they win then the teams play again the next day, double-elimination style. Yeah, that'll happen.
Why would the second place team from the Big Ten Eleven deserve to be there? It has to be Florida.
as i Michigan alum, I am totally biased. however, after looking at the so called "rationale" for why FLA should go to the game, I have a hard time arguing with most of it....but, if all those reasons were true, then why wasn't Florida ranked ahead of Michigan last week? if that system is so good, then they should have been ahead of Michigan and all the coaches and Harris poll voters should have had them ahead too. For them to suddenly switch their votes to vote Michigan not going (primiarly to NOT see a rematch with OSU) is utter and complete horse sh*t. they don't deserve to vote then. they should have had Michigan behind Florida all along if the arguments that are being made in favor of Florida going to the championship game. therefore, as things stand, Michigan should go....it would likely be a better game too.

Following this line of logic - Florida should give back their NC in 1996 because they played FSU, who they had already lost to in the regular season?
Good point about the 1996 NC as it relates to the current situation. I really can\'t lose in this one and may be actually unbiased since I have one degree from U of M and one degee from U of F. That said, given what happened yesterday I\'d give Florida the nod.
On the SEC thing - I\'ve lived in the southeast most of my life (currently in Tennessee) and don\'t really buy into the hype about the SEC. I think it may be the strongest conference, but not by a huge margin. For Florida, Tennessee, Auburn and Arkansas you have Vandy, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Kentucky. While each of these can produce a surprise (like Vandy beating Georgia in Athens this year) they relate to Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and Auburn the way Northwestern, Indiana and Illinois relate to Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. As difficult as it is to schedule SEC schools should play more schools from power conferences. Yes, Michigan had a hard time with Ball State, but at least that is a 1A program - Western Carolina - give me a break. They couldn\'t even compete in the Southern Conference.

This is the silly logic that gets thrown around on these boards. Is the SEC the toughest conference in football? Maybe. But you CANNOT argue that Florida had one of the toughest schedules in football when they never stepped outside of the SEC. Who knows, the SEC might even be mediocre. They beat some ranked opponents in their own conference. Good for them.
Isn't it a bit ironic that USC can't even get through their own supposedly weak conference, but then everytime they played an "elite" team from another major conference, it was like they were playing a high school team. USC beat five ranked teams this year, two out of the top ten, both of whom they crushed. I'm not arguing that USC desrves a shot after their blunder, but to argue that Florida deserves a shot over Michigan because of playing an incestuous schedule is ridiculous. The one time they actually did step out of conference and play a mediocre Florida State team, they were pushed to the limit.

Out of 13 OSU games this year, only U-M and U-T ranked in OSU's vicinity (see schedule below). So give OSU a repeat opponent? There are no other teams?
