my guess, undotunately, is no. rutgers best chance at the naional championship is to win out in its last 3 and win the big east championship game. that should put them in the second bcs bowl, which again they would have to win (i forget which one that is). then they have to hope that ohio state and michigan both lose one game, and the better of the two loses the national championship bcs bowl.
at that point they may be declared co-national champions with the winner of the top bcs bowl.
Ummmm....if Rutgers isn't in the BCS CHAMPIONSHIP game then they can't be the NATIONAL CHAMPION...:)

This particular year IF Rutgers and Boise State remain undefeated (which is especially doubtful in the case of Rutgers), they should square off in the second-best BCS bowl, a consolation game of sorts.
Second best BCS bowl? You must be joking. Boise State never plays ANY hard programs...and Rutgers is new to the national scene. As they all say on sports-talk radio, you have to earn your respect with the polls before you can play for the championship. That besing said, what I am about to say has been on ALL of the radio shows and ALL of the websites...hardly plagarism since we even talk about it at the water cooler as well:
Look at Auburn a couple years about going 13-0. They built their program over the years and now it is given the respect similar to the USCs and Ohio States of the world. That respect is reflected in the poll rankings. If this season West Virginia ran the table, on top of beating that Georgia team from last year's BCS matchup, then they would most likely be playing for the championship.
The problem is that, you can't have a playoff system. There is too much money on the table by the BCS sponsors (Fedex, Nokia, Tostitos, Allstate, and whoever sponsors the Rose bowl.) Each school qualifying gets like 10 million $, so you know the school ADs and Prezs want to keep the status quo. A playoff of the top 8 teams...you'd have TV scheduling conflicts as to when the games were played, people unwilling to travel to venues, etc...
A diffacult situation, because Rutgers is in a location where tons of media are screaming bloody murder about how talented the this team is, and how special a group of kids it is. I think their RB has a shot at the Heismann. If their non-conference were against harder teams than Miami of Ohio and Hamilton, they would have more of my respect as well. They will probably loose down at WVU, but that's the way it goes. If they win, they goto the BCS to further prove that they belong.
The best thing the program can do is try and maintain its dominance. Bringing back the coach, RB, and the talented defensive line would assist in giving them a solid pre-season ranking and thus increase their chances of playing for the national title next year. This year it will goto the winner of the OSU/U of Mich game and most likely USC or the winner of the SEC title game.
Well, Auburn got beat. Who is surprised? This is possibly the most over-rated team out there. Somehow even with one loss, they were ranked 6th in the BCS standings. Who is in love with Auburn? Last year in their bowl game, they were HUMILIATED by Wisconsin. Somehow they came back to be ranked something like 5th in this year's pre-season polls. Well, Georgia just showed us (yet again) how over-rated this team is. Yet somehow, I bet they will stay in the top ten even with two losses. It defies logic.
OK:
#4 texas loses
#5 auburn loses
#6 florida beats unranked s.c.--by one point
#8 cal loses
#11 arkansas loses
#14 boise state beats sj state...by three points.
where does rutgers stand now???? top 5? 6?
Rutgers did not play Miami of Ohio and Hamilton(?).
It was Ohio and Howard. They also played North Carolina on the road and Illinois. While these teams may not be good, when the schedules are made you don't know how good those teams will be in five years
Rutgers beat Illinois 33-0, Ohio state beat them 17-10.
I'm a huge Rutgers fan, I think they should be ranked about tenth. But, as to going undefeated, beating West Virginia in Morgontown is tough for any team.
Arkansas won easily. If Arkansas wins out they will have the best resume of all 1 loss teams.
Rutgers will be ranked at least 10th in the BCS (when the rankings come out later today). I expect something like 5th or 6th.
Rutgers 6th in the BCS!!!
w00t!
BCS
1 Ohio State
2 Michigan
3 Southern California
4 Florida
5 Notre Dame
6 Rutgers
7 Arkansas
The Computers have RUTGERS #2 (Michigan #1) ahead of Ohio State. Anybody what to bet with those guys??

Not true.
After all, remember that the AP decides who the national champion is and the BCS is only in place to find the two top teams to play in the BCS game (and the AP poll isn't part of the BCS rankings anymore). If the BCS title game is a dud and the voters give the BCS no.3 team enough votes to get to no. 1 in the AP poll they 'share' the championship with whoever won the BCS. Just ask USC.

Even better than the team who pasted them by 36 points. Considering that Arkansas' SOS is 81st, according to saragin, i'm not quite sure what thier resume is.
Sagarin is sketchy, but USC does possess the second hardest schedule in the nation. Kind of hard to argue with that.

Thank you.
Funny how many people think they know their shit on here.
okay:
how does rutgers win a national championship?
1. cal beats usc
2. usc beats the irish
3. ohio state and michigan...tie? close game? or is it better with a walloping?
4. rutgers pummels west virginia
what else?
Actually, you have to include a few more teams to help Rutgers get into the BCS championship game:
1. USC loses to Cal or UCLA.
2. Notre Dame loses to USC.
3. Arkansas loses to LSU or Mississippi State
4. Florida loses to W Carolina or Florida St
5. Rutgers runs the table and destroys West Virginia
6. Finally, Rutgers must get more love from the human polls.
I'm an RU fan, but there's too many "what ifs" for them to play in Glendale on Jan 8th. I would be shocked if they even beat WVU on Dec 2nd (I hope I'm wrong).
I believe runningart is correct. In the days before the BCS system, you could have teams sharing the national title. The reason for including a sepatate National Championship game was to do away with that, and actaully claim a national champion. Whoever wins that game in Arizona is the sole champ, in the eyes of the NCAA. The AP no longer decides this. They have a say in who gets to the game but that's it.

I'm not sure what the bigger joke is. Rutgers @ #2 by the computers or Ohio State #6 by one computer. You are fooling yourself to think that 1.) Rutgers wouldn't get beat by over 30 points by Ohio State, 2.) Rutgers is a REAL top 10 team. They are a joke and play cream of the crap teams.
But to answer your question, I will take a bet with the computers OR better off, YOU that Ohio State will be ranked higher than Rutgers at the end of the season. Hell, they might be ranked higher than Rutgers if they should lose this weekend.
I doubt Rutgers would lose by 30 points to anybody. The most points anyone scored on them all year was 25 (Louisville). It's not like Rutgers has a bunch of walk ons, either. Schiano has recruited heavily in South Florida and in NJ- for the same kids that used to flee to the Big Ten, SEC, Pac10, etc. For the first time, Rutgers is beginning to make headway to land the big blue chip recruits.
As long as Schiano stays, Rutgers will be a powerhouse. They have a lot of underclassmen playing this season.
