Every HS program I know of violates this rule.
I know a coach who meets his kids everyday all summer
in the morning.

actually, the people who made this rule had other sports in mind, not XC.
most of these practice rules are in place for basketball and football, sports with the potential for abuse. if this rule wasn't in place, there would be h.s. football practice every day of the week, 365 days a year.
i agree that a club system, like the ones in place for swimming, but no one is instituting this rule in h.s. to punish runners or prohibit american distance running from flourishing.

yes, they're clearly trying to stop the pipeline of York runners dominating the international circuit. Newsflash:
Marius Bakken is retired and not American. There are no others.
I never said it was a good rule, I think it's horrible that these kids have regulations on how they can train. But it's a rule and there for a unfair advantage over the teams who have to apply to this rule. If york is allowed to compete they will have had an unfair advantage.
sounds like a typical jealous York hating competitor.
i would suggest the other coaches learn some more about coaching, training and motivation. then, maybe they could beat york through racing, not sending in newspaper clippings.
pretty pathetic and not surprising. fyi, i do not / did not go to york.[/quote]
maybe they counted the two a days as 2 sessions in one day, giving it 50 total
Great message to send to kids and the sport alike: work hard for years and years, be successful, and spend alot of time helping kids...if you spend an extra day or two with them, your career is over
Maybe Joe Newton can team up with Dave Houle and write a book about how important it is to follow all the rules, no matter how many championship trophies you've won.
I agree with this, still disappointing that Newton was suspended though.
As far as I understand it though, Newton is only suspended for this cross country season, while the assistant is suspended for the whole year.
The Newt only coaches XC. I hope this doesn't take the fun out of it for him.
definitely sukcs, but he can still take his team to NTN in December. School can't touch him for that as it is operated as a USATF Club meet.
It won't. Coach's don't care about this administrative bullshit anyway. His team will still dominate.

I wonder for how many years he has broken this same rule?
Oh well, if Newton wanted to get kids running 100 mile weeks and run them twice a day, he could quit the HS and start his own private club. NO restrictions then. Kids could run in all sorts of open meets and just become great runners.
But no, he has chose to work in the HS system, get paid by that system, get buses and facilities by that system, so the system's rules are important.
The purpose of the rules that prevent contact between coaches and athletes are to prevent the sort of over-zealous over-demanding type of coaching that Newton is so famous for.
So he should be suspended.

If Newton took his team to NTN, that would be the last time he ever coached the Dukies. It would be a sad and very egomanical way to end a brilliant career.

Other coaches had to play by the rules, and they were continually getting beat by York, so I can't blame them for being frustrated.
Had to play by the rules?????? there is only one rule in life and that is dont get caught. anyone who spends their entire life making sure they always follow the rules are never successful.
that goes from a hs xc coach to oprah to a hs principal to the president.
I HOPE YORK GETS FIRED UP ABOUT THIS AND STARTS running fast and maybe takes a break near a new subdivsion and light it up big time
I agree, I got suspended for pretty much my whole out door track season my senior year. Get this...because after a meet I didn't come home on the team bus, when my mom wrote my coach a letter giving her permission. My coach worked hard to find out I visited my friend who lived close to the meet. I wish York chose not to run state and then show to Nats and win.

Where's greenliner at?
I'm interested in his opinion on this.
That's pathetic. Like getting beat by 40 sec and then turning in the winner for violating a "no jewlery rule" or some lame s hit like that.
