I'm a beginner marathoner, ran my first one last year in October in Amsterdam. I am planning to run in Lisbon on the 6th of October and possibly in Venice on the 27th of October. I am looking for some training advice and advice about running 2 marathons in quick succession. My current plan of action is as follows:
- Lisbon is 24 weeks out. Venice is 3 weeks later.
- Main objective is to run in Lisbon. I will be in Venice during the marathon so thought why not.
- I can comfortably run 25km per week.
- Gradually increase volume with 10% each week, until reaching 60km per week. Then increasing with increments of 5% up until week 21-21, then tapering to Lisbon.
- Mainly, if not only low heart rate training (zone 2) for two months (8-9 weeks) to build a strong aerobic capacity.
- Gradually add in speedwork from week 9-10 onwards, depending on how my body reacts to the increasing volume.
- Adding in a recovery week every 4 weeks with lower intensity runs and lower mileage.
I don't necessarily have a strict goal for the marathon in Lisbon, but I'd love to run towards 3:30.
Is it feasible to combine the two marathons? I would run faster in Lisbon and then take it easy in Venice three weeks later. All thoughts are welcome!
