Compared to a 5k workout? In the past I tried racing myself into fitness but only got so far without a workout.
The biggest benefit of racing as training is that it trains you to push yourself mentally. For pure fitness gains it is much more beneficial to do a variety of workouts which stress different energy systems. More bang for your buck, and significantly decreases your risk of injury.
Racing is a great way to get in shape. Only if it comes after a good training cycle obviously.
