I am a high school male who runs cross country and track. I have been running since I was in the 5th grade, competitively since I was in 7th. Since beginning to take training seriously, here has been my major medical history, chronologically:
- compartment syndrome in left leg
- stress fracture in left shin
- stress reaction in left shin
- full kneecap dislocation left leg
- stress fracture in left ankle
The first three issues are separated by a year, and the kneecap dislocation was two months after the stress reaction then the ankle fracture 5 months after the kneecap. All the injuries really started to pick up when I started growing. I went from 5'3 for the first injury to now 5'11 and probably done growing.
These were the only medically diagnosed issues, I have had a ton of other smaller issues in between each one. The most common being "shin splints" which really prevent me from doing any more than 15-20 miles per week. I know it seems like my left leg is the only bad one, but I get shin splints just as bad in right leg.
The most miles I have been able to build up to healthy was 35 before the first diagnosis.
Things I have tried:
- checking sleep
- checking nutrition
- resting, longest period of straight rest was like 8 weeks after the kneecap dislocation.
- aggressive rehab after each injury (balance, resistance bands, stretching, etc.)
- consistent strength training for running-specific muscles
- super low volume running (like 10-15mpw and still being injured)
- changing my form (higher cadence, midfoot strike)
- basically everything there is much more I can't think of
The reason I'm making this thread is because I have shin splints again, but it feels more like a stress reaction since it is localized. It is also in the left leg again, but I have a similar feeling on the right.
I feel like I can never get a proper build up and a foundation under me because I get injured while trying to build up and then it is just a game of catch-up where I have to do speedwork I'm not ready for, and the injury cycle repeats.
I would really appreciate some feedback or input from anyone who has experienced something similar or has some advice. This is very frustrating to me since I do genuinely want to run.
Thank you.
