One big workout where you do:
some volume
some speed training
some drills
some interval or vo2max work
some weights
upper body work
1 to 2 hours or however long you can manage it, and be 100% + gains after a long rest.
Advantage: 3 days full rest is full rest. Do one thing one day, one thing the next day, and the next day is not full rest, even if it's a different exercise. That's why Bowerman told Prefontaine no exercise for 3 days before a race, in the movie.
Disadvantage?: "you'll get injured." No, stay within your limits. "you won't reach your potential at any one thing." Maybe, but this is the correct base training. Do it this way all winter or other off-season.
