Its interesting how the 1500m is scored-- by time not place. He would have received the same points for a 4:08 as a 4:20. So, this raises a question of why Beach did what he did. Perhaps it was out of respect.
it sure looks like it, he appeared to be out for a saturday morning run with his dog or something. he probaly let conner win this one because he knows when they get to the games, conner is doing to go out with the leaders and eventually dnf or walk it in.
Clayton Young Okay, but to add more context, I’ll write a short race recap. The first few miles were fairly chill. I touched the lead at 2.2 so I could get my bottle without the pack closing in, but I grabbed the straw and it...
After 26.2 miles, training partners Conner Mantz and Clayton Young are booked for Paris 2024 in the men’s marathon. #mtusa #marathontrials24 #marathon #teamu...
Young was clearly have a conversation and even gestured for CM to take the win. I cant relate to that at all. If you can win, win. In a way it almost makes Mantz look bad.
The fair effort rule is never going to be applied in a case like that. It is for the people showing up in a heat/final and jogging the race.
this was a respect thing to let Eaton win the event where he was setting the Wr. It is like not kicking down the woman division leader at the local turkey trot.
I ran the Trials and heard Mantz talking to another runner after the race. He said he was confused why Clayton let him win since after the 20K champs they agreed to not do something similar again and to race to the line. Sounded like they hadn't even had a chance to discuss it together yet, which was kind of funny given the large amount of speculation on the internet about it
I find this whole thing very interesting. Personally, I never would have let someone else win, with the possible exception of if they needed it much more than I did. I would also never want someone else to gift me a win. And as a viewer, I much prefer a race to the finish.
Even Mantz appears to be a bit nonplussed about the whole thing. He's the Olympic Trials champ, but he wasn't the best runner out there and everyone knows it. It's a bit awkward for him. I found it interesting that he said "we talked about this after last time and decided to always race it in".
But, man, I get the sense that this is just who Clayton Young IS. He just thinks differently than I do. From everything we know, he's a highly admirable person. And more to the point, the way he thinks becomes the way he trains and races, and (although with the requisite elite talent) is why he's the runner he is today. We should probably consider it more of a learning experience than anything: something about Young's mentality is working extremely well, and it's the sort of equanimity that quite a few elite runners appear to have. And, for better or worse, the Trials finish was a manifestation of that mentality.
There are a number of reasons why Young backed off, but we’ll never know why. We suspect it’s money, but, who knows, he was excited as heck and maybe he thought he was being humble.
Personally, I would’ve done just enough to get the win, especially if I knew the other guy was struggling. But, they are training partners, Mantz had locked up the #1 seed previously, I doubt Clayton expected it to be that “easy,” and, honestly, why sap the legs anymore than you have to when you’ve locked up a spot?

Has anyone considered that Mantz's wife might be pregnant? In the fifth installment of the Fast and Furious movies, a few members of the group do a quarter-mile street race with stolen Brazilian police cars; each member bets $1 million on himself, so the winner would go home with $4 million. The race comes down to Brian and Dom (Paul Walker and Vin Diesel), and Brian edges out Dom for the win...or so it seems. The other two racers, Han and Roman (Sung Kang and Tyrese Gibson), quickly point out to Brian that Dom let off the throttle at the line to let Brian win. Earlier in the movie, Brian's wife (who is also Dom's sister) reveals she is pregnant. One theory is that Dom let Brian win the $4 million to help his sister and brother-in-law as they start their new family. Maybe Young was doing the same for Mantz?
