What year were the Dragonflys invented?
The prototypes were being used by pros by the time of worlds in 2019, not sure if pros had them earlier in the year but definitely not in 2018.
The model out today was being used by pros in outdoor in 2020 though
Dragonfly like insects first appear 325 mya, but their evolutionary history isn't fully understood.
They were used in diamond league meets in spring 2019 but US Nike athletes.
Began to be widely used at the end of 2020, but many pros had them in Doha in 2019. Thomas Ratcliffe also had them when he came 3rd in the 5k at the 2019 NCAA outdoor championships. The 2020/2021 season were when they began to be widely used by everyone, and it was also the season where even other shoe companies began to realize that they needed to let their athletes compete in them to make up the disadvantage before their shoe tech could catch up. In 2020, many many runners in the 5k and 10k were realizing the power of super shoes and were racing 5ks in Next Percents. I remember being at BU meets in early 2020 right before Covid seeing kids racing in the road shoes.
Prototype models were worn by Nike athletes in 2019, the earliest I can recall was Jakob Ingebrigtsen wearing the white prototypes when he won the 3000m at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow 2019. They may have been in development in 2018 given they were used so early in 2019 but that’s just pure conjecture on my part.
BTC had early prototypes as early as late 2017 that they were testing. Muir had raced in them in early 2019 in indoors (Jan/Feb), and they were no longer a secret.
Your conjecture is correct. There was a guy on the old tracktalk site (is that stills thing?) that had 2-3 extremely early pairs of prototypes. I think that was around 2018.
How about Rupp's thicc spikes in 2016? Are they considered DF protos?

Debatable. Matumbo 3’s with the early zoomX foam. Definitely a one off. I’ve seen a 3d printed Dragonfly midsole and plate on a really early prototype that’s out there somewhere. Japanese guy from Tracktalk had it maybe?
