Knight doesn’t even care enough about track to buy a team…
I seem to remember nonUSA students have other NIL limits but you could blow 14 scholarships on them…
Every kid you run into at these national meets are supporting Tennessee attire. They must have 20+ commits per region. Some poor kid is going to get caught holding an empty bag soon
What funny is one of those hot shot recruits they have next fall has a massive police record on him. I get recruiting the best runners but I hope they are ready for the baggage that comes with it. It's about finding the right fit for your program. Money doesn't win you national titles
Current power 5 D1 guy here, some things need to be cleared up:
These "scholarship" NIL deals are very sneaky and in a lot of cases take advantage of naive (through no fault of their own) high schoolers. Not only does their quasi quid pro quo nature violate NCAA rules, but they are essentially a handshake agreement. Unlike an actual NLI, nothing is signed by either party and the athlete does not receive "scholarship athlete" status. The latter should really be underlined in red because that status, even if just books, generally keeps an athlete from getting cut outside of extenuating circumstances such as a coaching change.
Sketchy coaches know most kids won't really read the fine print here, and just look at the big dollar signs. The fact is a lot of the kids being offered these deals are essentially on 1 year "trial runs". The coaches give out a ton of NIL money that does not count against the scholarship limit, and just cut whoever does not perform because all of these guys are legally just walk-ons. Furthermore, the money can just be taken away at any time for any reason, or just never even given in the first place.
Any parents or high school guys/gals reading this: Be very wary of these deals. NIL is awesome, but it should be a bonus. Always negotiate your worth in terms of a hard NLI scholarship, even if it seems like an insignificant amount. It's better to have the security of being a scholarship athlete, than money you may or may not receive depending on funding and your coaches personal character. There is no shame in being a walk on either, the standards are quite high especially on the men's side these days. Just know that your freshman year is very much a "trial run" and come into every race and practice with that mindset
While the idea of Alston Awards providing an annual discount to student-athletes could potentially assist in managing college-related expenses, it's crucial to consider the NCAA regulations and guidelines. The NCAA imposes limits on the number and value of athletic scholarships to maintain fair competition among member schools. Introducing Alston Awards as a way to circumvent these limits may raise concerns about compliance with NCAA rules.
Additionally, the concept of stockpiling talent through various forms of aid, including Alston Awards, could be subject to scrutiny. It's essential for universities to adhere to NCAA regulations to ensure fair play and maintain the integrity of college sports.
The Alston is supposed to go with a scholarship, not instead of one. Idea behind it was low income scholarship kid was not allowed to work, but had no spending money in their pocket, making daily campus life difficult and embarrassing compared to rich kid on scholarship.
There has not been a mass exodus of runners from TN, so they must be delivering on promises.
Old thread, but how has he been able to do so much better in the portal at Tennessee? I think Notre Dame only took a couple grad transfers, and I can't think of one undergrad transfer when he was there.
