Initially, this thread was entitled "UCLA track coach, Sean Brosnan, Fired for NCAA violations" but we changed it as Brosnan told us he was simply not renewed for next year.
100% spot on. Brosnan is building a woman’s xc power!! He took Dalia Frias from Duke!!! He coached NP high school, and based on that he convinced himself he was Chip Kelly. What a joke. Completely delusional.
So many NP fans thought he would win the NCAA XC in year one. He is a good coach who nobody would know had he not stumbled into his HS job. I can't imagine that anyone will hire him now.
That may be true BUT coaching distance runners is not rocket science. Almost anyone could do it. Recruiting is another issue of course but Brosnan is not exactly reinventing the wheel here. He is not indispensable and if he brings baggage or whatever it is adios amigos.
The facts are simple. Sean wanted to be good. He worked hard. He pushed the limits. But - as SO MANY states when he was hired- UCLA simply doesn’t give a crap about distances. They don’t provide enough funding, use the lowest salaried staffing coach position to be “coach”, and when a little bit of shine comes in a negative way they run for the hills. UCLA has an entire different focus for Track and Field and it’s not distances. Rip SB
Somehow this comes across as Sean is a victim. He was a bigger pain than his value. There was very little shine in proportion to the negative way. He screwed up and he paid the price. See ya!!!
Unlikely. Anyone really familiar with the situation would be surprised if JV was actually sleeping with the athlete at the center of the scandal. Yes it was a weird situation but not sexual. His firing was spearheaded by some disgruntled field athletes who were unhappy with how he didn't care about that part of the track team and managed to find dirt on him to get the AD to force him to resign.

lmaooo theres literally no one who thought that hed win xc in year 1. he is a great coach tho

If this is actually true, than how come only a handful of NCAA coaches are consistently successful?
It’s a huge oversimplification. There’s no doubt that coaches like John McDonnell have an exceptional ability to spot potential and nurture it. Once people see you can do that you’ll start to get good recruits more easily, but for the majority of programs people don’t understand the role recruiting plays in success (and the monumental time commitment it is). It’s not enough just to be a good coach.

Sure it is a stretch because they decided that they wanted to he far away from home.
Well, Tyynismaa started at Alabama (97 miles from home) and transferred to NC State (493 miles). Your argument would be, "She wanted to stay at home" and therefore NC State must have done something sinister to get her to move so far away.
There is a good possibility that the runners themselves brought each other in. These are three runners who lived in the same area and went to high school at the same time. I am sure they raced each other numerous times in both XC and T&F over the last few years and knew each other well.
Who was first, Barnett? Once she announced, the other two probably sent her messages congratulating her, etc. They may have even told her they envied her because they were getting homesick on the East coast. One thing leads to another and the second one transfers. Now the talk becomes, "We can have a Super Team if you come join us!" Before you know it, the HS friends are back together. I don't see this as far-fetched at all.
Nobody dared accuse Henes of being involved in Tyynismaa's transfer (and if they did I am sure the post was immediately deleted). There was talk on the board of her hanging out with the NC State runners at the Boston meet in December and then the first week of January she announces her transfer. She certainly did not have nearly the history with these runners (Tuohy, Chmiel and Rauber from NY, Bush from Ohio, and Tyynismaa from AL) that Barnett, Frias, and McDonnell had.
Seems like the administration didn't agree that it was baseless. I guess if the guy who claimed he was a 9xAll American says it was baseless, it must have been. You choose to believe Brosnan over the administration that hired him.
At the end of the day schools like UCLA don’t care too much about the competitive records of non revenue sports. Sure, if the team is good, that’s nice, but first and foremost they just want no drama. If there’s any drama, even a little, it’s not worth it to the AD. What Brosnan was selling, UCLA wasn’t buying.
My question here is why did they hire him in the first place and suddenly make scholarships available for distance runners? They knew what they were getting, as he made no secrets about the plan. Now they have 4 scholarship runners and no coach on women's side.
Skimming this thread, it's kinda hard not to notice how most of the people ripping SB are registered users, and almost all the people defending him are anonymous.
Most regular LRCers (registered users) would be jealous of Brosnan’s success and opportunities and are happy to see him fail. Just being happy to see others fail is a hallmark of this site’s culture.

So ironic, and I am sure he used that very sentence to the freshman on their first day of training. Talk about a lack of self awareness? My god, what an ego.
