Is a 1:46 in superspikes in the same league as a 1:43.55?
Super spikes don't work for 1500m on down because it lowers the cadence by several spm. That's why most pro 800 guys just wear sprint spikes. 1500 guys wear them because super shoes are more comfortable and easier to wear in practice and longer workouts.
Not true. They confer an advantage of 2 seconds, at least, in the 1500. They probably don’t do anything in the 800, true, maybe a little. The primary thing with these shoes is they allow athletes do harder workouts and to recover more quickly. But they definitely help in races from 1500 on up.
I think Sumner will run 1:45-something but not sub-1:45 since he has other races to run. We’ll see. Kid is capable of a sub-1:45 right now, but I’m going to say 1:45.33 for grins.
These days - Flatt himself seems to be having trouble staying afloat even in shallow water!
I have no dog in the fight. I don't get all wrapped in this fanboy stuff and just appreciate good performances by promising athletes. I'm sure that Flatt will be fine. It just seems as if he had some injury issues.
That said, my problem with Flatt is that he was overly cocky last year. I'm not sure if this has changed. That isn't bad if you're already at the top but he still had not proven himself. Also, there were a lot of fans out there that proclaimed Flatt was so much better than Sumner and would FLATTen him this season.
Best of luck to both going forward. It sucks that Flatt had the injury but perhaps he was humbled a bit this season and will now temper the rhetoric somewhat.

Lol. There is zero evidence super spikes work.
Table below the 10th best 1500m time in the world & the 15th best for each year.

Running the 2nd (and also the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th) fastest HS 800 of all time and making it to the semifinals of the world team trials didn't prove himself? As far as I'm concerned he's the most accomplished 800 runner of all time, I think his "cockiness" was earned.

“As far as I'm concerned he's the most accomplished 800 runner of all time…”
😂🤣 Most accomplished of all time - too funny. He might as well retire now since he has nothing left to prove.
You come across as a rather dim witted person so it’s not a surprise you would think that. Thank you for the laugh, though.
Brazier still did far better. Why are almost all American runners so slow?
For reference, Kenya has 8 sub 1:46 athletes including 6 at altitude, 7 sub 3:35 athletes including 2 at Nairobi, and 9 sub 13:10. You're almost certain to see at least one Kenyan medal in every distance event at the Olympics/Worlds.
America's "best" runners only receive very infrequent silver and bronze medals.
Yeah. I can't believe that at the last World Athletics championships the US won more medals than the next 3 countries combined, and more gold medals than the next 5 combined. So slow.

Damn, someone should've told Rudisha to come out of retirement so he could prove himself against Cade Flatt! According to his fanboys he could run 1:38 if he just started running 20 more mpw...

Altitude is irrelevant in the 800m
This kids about to break 1:45 and he’s 19. There’s no way you’re calling that slow.

USA is one of the best 800m countries in the world, unfortunate that’s it’s not line it was 3-4 years ago where we could put 3-4 guys in a final at a time, but to say the US sucks is a bad take. I think we are about to have a great year in middle distance.
Yes, we are super-spoiled when it comes to 800 talent in the US. Kenya is good too, obviously. But the US has a few athletes who could medal. Here are our top performers so far this year, not bad.
Clayton Murphy 1:44.75 Isaiah Jewett 1:45.10 Kameron Jones 1:45.20 Brandon Miller 1:45.30 Isaiah Harris 1:45.41 Wes Ferguson 1:45.46 Bryce Hoppel 1:45.59 Vincent Crisp 1:45.70 Will Sumner 1:46.00

It’s a lot more complicated than just an even conversion rate.
Dragonflies were designed for people running 4:00 mile pace, as they are intended to be the 5000m spike for elites, Nike actually used to push the victory more for the mile and 3k and said the dragonflies were 5k-10k. They are made to work best when someone is running at that pace with good mechanics.
My theory is that the spikes help people racing right at about 4:00 mile pace the most, that’s why we aren’t seeing the 1500m/mile records drop or even be threatened, but the amount of 3:57-4:05 milers in the world has gone up by a massive amount.
In my personal experience, I’ve felt no benefit from dragonfly’s or air victory’s in racing, but they are much nicer on my tendons and calves than normal spikes and my legs thank me the next day.

Altitude is not irrelevant in the 800. At the low end of the ratio, the 800 is 60% aerobic and 40% anaerobic and higher, towards 70-30 for some.
The NCAA 800 meter conversion for an altitude of 6888 (Flagstaff) is a 1:24 second allowance.

Yes, BUT
Because the 800m is an event where one must achieve near max velocity, and is raced much more like a sprint, wind/air resistance starts playing a big role once you are getting to elite times. It’s the same idea as to why high altitude sprints can’t count in national/world record books.
The two factors counteract eachother very well interestingly enough. It seems to even out the faster you can run, because higher velocity is needed, and the event becomes more anaerobic the faster you get it at.
I actually set my PB at about 5000 feet of elevation, and I know others who have done similar only to come down to sea level and run the same time or slower/barely faster. An acquaintance of mine has run 1:47 up here but hasn’t been able to crack 1:48 out of state interestingly enough. Yet, in the 15, 5k, and 10k, you’re all but guaranteed a fat PR or SB moving from where I am down to sea level.
