The two big misses here are Jacob Kiplimo and Jakob. Last year the two Kenyans Krop and Kimeli dominated and ran 12:46. This year, though, Cheptegei, Katir and Aregawi seem to be in better form and the field is deeper with Fisher, Grijalva, Lobalu etc. A couple of guys are due for big PBs in Grijalva, Chelimo, Tefera and McSweyn.

Entirely possible the entire field runs under 13 minutes. Cheptegei would be the favourite if this is in July but he seems better at championship racing - doesn't dominate the circuit like Jakob does. If it's in May I think Aregawi or Krop takes it.

It's in June, and historically Cheptegei has not been at his best by this sort of spot. However, he did run a creditable 3rd at World XC. Krop hasn't really been up to his standards yet, though maybe he's gearing up for this one. Kipkorir Kimeli went 26:54 at Road to Records, Aregawi very strong in the Doha 3k, Kejelcha (12:50 in Lille), Katir (7:24i) seem to be in top form. So, I'd probably put Aregawi and Kipkorir Kimeli as the co-favorites with Cheptegei, Krop and Katir next up, and then Fisher, Kejlecha, and Lobalu as dark horses.

Jakob could race Monaco 5000. Oslo he'll almost certainly run the 1500, also announced for 1500 in Lausanne (5000 there has Cheptegei, Lamecha Girma, Selemon Barega). Then there's Zurich on 31 August but there's also a 1500 there

Curious scheduling for Ahmed.
A 10km road race on Saturday in Ottawa vs Levins, followed up with a 5000m in Florence just 6 days later. Tough dealing with travel/jet lag with 10k of concrete pounding in your legs. You would have thought he'd want to be fresh given this could be the best opportunity of the year for a fast time.
Please though not a complaint - happy Schumacher is letting Ahmed out to race twice in a 7 day period!

Yeah I’m an idiot, I forgot WC performance doesn’t factor into DL final qualification. I don’t see him focusing on the 5k if the rumors about targeting the 1500 record are true. Someone mentioned Monaco 5k as a possibility, but surely they’ll have a 1500 even if it’s not a Diamond discipline, right?

It has been the rumour for some now regarding Jakob. I believe the reason that Girma will not be present is a wr attempt in Rabat 4 days previous with he and El Bakkali.
