His 4th place at Worlds should have clued you in. No guy legitimately capped at 13:02 is closing like a train to finish 4th in that field. Guatemala is lucky to have Luis. As an American I really wish he was representing us.
I didn’t see grijalva running that fast ever. I guess I underestimated him too! He’s a pretty good miler with great XC results so I guess I should have seen it coming.
C'mon. I know none of y'all were predicting Grijalva to outkick Cheptegei, Klecker, Kincaid, Grant Fisher, Mo Ahmed, Berihu Aregawi, Krop, and Kipkorir. And come within a second of Katir and Kejelcha.
Everyone one of these guys except Klecker and Kincaid are 12:40s guys.
I knew he was intrinsically a lot better than a 13:02 guy after the way he finished 4th at World's, but it is still shocking to see a 12:52 ahead of all those guys. He wasn't able to run in Europe on the circuit any time he wanted because of his immigration status, so we hadn't seen his true level. Still, no Mike Smith coached athlete at or after NAU had broken 13 before; most had peaked at NAU, so this is very welcome news. He's lived here almost his entire life and he was brought here by his parents. It is a crying shame he can't get citizenship.
Did this guy ever win an ncaa title? I feel like Mike Smith keeps stepping up his game I mean this guy has improved alot since Ncaa didn't he get beat by teare his last ncaas? I mean what a jump up.
Yes but this also makes you wonder what Teare will do when he takes a good shot at a 5k. Not taking anything at all away from Grivalja as he might very well be much better than Teare, but I think Teare is going to be sub 12:55 soon. People laughed at a post I made saying Teare would have to run low 12:50s to make a US 5k team. Who's laughing about that now? Fisher 12:46, Woody 12:51, Klecker 12:55, Chelimo 12:57, Nur 13:05 while tripping. How does someone make this team if they can't run low 12:50s? If anything I think someone's gonna have to be a 12:45 athlete to make the US team within the next 5 years.
Luis Grijalva, who qualified to run for his native Guatemala, risked not being able to return to the United States if he left. On Monday, he got good news.

Isn’t Rojo starting a petition to get him to be an American in time for the World Championships? Or would Luis have a say in that?
Well he really needs to be an American for the Olympics since his country is banned. Unfortunately, its too late to switch countries for him to get in the Olympics.
With his 4th last year and now this race he has entered the mix as a potential medal contender. It's crazy to think about a Guatemalan winning a distance medal.
