1:46.99 at the Desert Heat classic in Tucson with splits of 52.77-54.22. Over a second improved from his high school best.
all of the "sahlman needs to jump ship" posts a few months into his college running career made me laugh.
I'm guessing 1:45 low and 3:35 high for sahlman this year.
Just want to confirm you think Sahlman will cut an additional ~1.5 seconds from his 800 PB (a total of nearly three seconds off a well-trained HS PB) in the next six weeks.
C'MON...this is Letsrun.com, the home of "If you don't run world records every time you race you are a washed up dirtbag". People here write off EVERRYYYYYYYYYONE.
And this is a guy who is CLEARLY not an 800m runner. 1:46.99 FAT as a freshman dropping out of his event. Sensational!! It's very clear (to me) that he is a miler/3k type with range. Great job by Colin Sahlman. Would like to see him take a shot at full mile right now. His best of 3:56.9y should go down.
Kinda crazy how good he's looking right now. He's not at the very top of the NCAA (*only* top 10 in the 8 and 15), but in recent years, the top of the NCAA has been world class. He's had really consistent progression for 5 years now, and with the range he has, it looks like he's got a ton of room to improve.
Before now, NAU didn't have much of a track record with mid-d guys. I think this bodes well for little Sahlman next year, and it'll be a lot of fun to watch all the NP guys duke it out in the future. We'll get to see NAU v Stanford and Young v Sahlman. I'm also really looking forward to see what Colin gets down to in the mile. 1:46 is pretty crazy speed for a freshman who's a 15/5k guy, especially since he won by 1.5s.

It’s my opinion, but I think the sport would be better if we did away with the”x” is a [discipline] narrative.
It almost always overshadows the athletes actually performance with the implication being that they’re “saving” their best effort for something else.
I do agree that Sahlman’s best event is the mile, but as long as he’s competitive, who cares what event he’s running.

This is huge for the Sahlman brothers. Colin’s splits suggest he can still run faster and Aaron, I would imagine, isn’t far behind
What about his splits make you think that’s not ideal? He’s not far off the “textbook” 2 seconds, but as a strength guy he’d probably prefer to be closer to even?
Not to split hairs, but it was a 1:47 first 700m. That said, and I know it's a crazy take, but I consider peak El Guerrouj to be a better runner than Colin Sahlman.
