yea this latest video was the last straw for me. been watching him since the georgetown 2mile TT days. his channel is just not interesting anymore. he's getting super gimmicky, and doesnt even train hard.

Except for the fact ryan trahan is a personality and managed to become one of the most famous youtubers and TAS will never amass his subscriber count/following
I would love to text this theory. Obviously he has great genetics. But he also has trained like a pro since pre teen years. I’m willing to bet you could get a decent number of less gifted runners pretty close to 3:32 if you did the same from a young age with a logical build and progression that Jakob has had.
Two things, first, Jakob is sponsored by Red Bull and it would be naturally to assume that TAS was just making a joke.
Second, many pro-athletes have energy drinks or pre-workout drinks ahead of a race. There are a few studies claiming that 100mg about an hour before competition can actually enhance performance and anti-doping rules say that, in some sports, your level must not exceed a certain level.
But having said this, I believe it was just a marketing thing and that’s it
You're a Troll. To say you have never seen anyone drink an energy drink at a track meet is a lie. What track meets do you frequent? Are you in high school? Are you in college? Are you a journalist? Are you a pro runner?
I have seen many runners drinking red bull before race. Including myself.
Ukrainian HJer Kateryna Tabashnyk was drinking Redbull during the HJ competition in Istanbul.
You would have to be an idiot to think drinking a RedBull before a race wouldn't give you any edge at all. Caffeine is a Performance enhancer, Taurine can help performance, and B vitamins can help performance. If Jakob Drinks Redbull or not I do not know but he is more than likely getting caffeine from another source if not.
A caffeine tablet and apple juice will achieve about the same effect, but I prefer Red Bull or any other full sugar energy drink before a race also. It’s not going to shave seconds off each mile, but it will usually maximize performance, even if part of it is placebo effect.
I ran my marathon PR having a redbull beforehand. 2:16, no issues.
If I coached XC I would bring a little mini fridge to every big meet
Let me preface by saying I agree with you. Several things about the TAS:
if u go back and watch his last couple of videos he made in summer of 2020 when he was in Colorado he was fit, lean, and motivated knowing he was about to join the brooks beast. He was confident in way he talked on those videos.
well for TAS, brooks beast experience was probably worst thing that ever happen to him from a running side. He was injured, had Covid and when he was running there are workouts where the Womens team wasn’t far behind him in their intervals time wise.
situation just broke him bc I think he realized he didn’t have the potential he may have thought he had.
I mean what’s his claim to fame credential? A 3:59 mile? That is beyond so common now at the collegiate level. U can barely get into NCAA champs w that possibly even be left out. Spencer has shown decent results on the roads w his turkey trots… I can’t fathom why he won’t race more on the roads.
fast forward til now, Spencer just appears to bum off Allie. He just goes thru the motions to maintain his channel. There is no drive and fire in him. He looks bad too w the patchy beard and little pudgy. In a recent video she filmed him walking out their house and he is whining about not wanting to run that day. Dude, u are a “pro runner” that has no job but income off YouTube clicks…
apart of me often does wonder if he does do more than what he YouTube’s and stravas.
He keeps mentioning this dream of qualifying for the OT in 1500. I just don’t see how he believes he’s gonna run 333ish training w Allie on a bike beside him, a semi pro triathlete and whoever the Will guy is who appears to just be a wknd warrior type runner. Why not realize that dream just isn’t feasible and pursue a great career on the roads?
Spencer is in his mid 20s and when I and most ppl peaked in their running. And only races he’s done since last spring was a TT around the lake he runs daily and a turkey trot. Like why?! How u expect to run and compete and get better if all u do all day is sit in Allie O home and play disc golf and once every 2-3 wks make a new YouTube video.
just pisses me off bc he is a prime example of Gen Z who has all the talent , was given life on a silver platter and yet lazy and waste said talent.
I want Spencer to succeed. I USE to enjoy his channel and I want him to race and race well often to provide content. I’m cheering for ppl like I am him more so than the “elite elite”.
but this going through the motion stuff not even half hearted is lame.
In another thread, I just claimed Salazar was Mexican. Is it true? Probably.
Kelly hopkins drinks red bull before 800
Only if that is true. To my surprise, Trahan actually worked himself into a legitimate Youtuber. He no longer does running related stuff. What a world we live in. Clowns everywhere.
I smoked pot with Kelly Hopkins
I buy it & it seems to be confirmed by some posters, even if it's not before every race. Caffeine is a legal performance enhancer. Guessing most top athletes take in a big dosage, especially before shorter races. Maybe that changes for longer distances and/or hot/humid conditions.
Red Bull is pretty big in Europe & in other endurance sports. A lot of the Norwegian triathletes use it. I don't think I've seen Jakob publicly endorse the product, which feels more like a T&F specific problem where he can't put the logo on his kit & provide more value if they were going to pay him.
I agree with a lot in here but I wouldn't be so hard on him. I've got no problem with him putting out fun content & making a living. I wish I could make a living that way.
He raced ~100 times in college. That's the reality for D1 runners. It's too much. You can't peak 3 times/year. It leads to burnout. Tons of good D1 runners stop running after college. For TAS, he probably did too many VO2 max workouts & not enough strength stuff. He got robbed of his spring track season & then, I agree, the Brooks Beasts stuff mixed with COVID broke him a bit. He lives in a great place for training & racing. His stated goal is to go after sub-14:00 in April. His 3k last year should have been enough to get him into those Dempsey meets. Would have been good to see him in some of those sub-4 races this indoor season. He seems to always get dropped into the B heat of races. Maybe not traveling for races & getting in those fast meets would help lead to some fast times. But he usually starts his season early & sometimes struggles at the end of the year. Maybe Coach Ari has him on the right path.
I think he's young enough that he can still focus on the 1500 track trials. It would be good to see him on the roads a bit more. Allie is running Carlsbad -- maybe he'll do that too. His dad was a good marathoner. He seems to struggle with the endurance stuff but it also seems like that hasn't always been present in training. Maybe he can get to the 2028 or 2032 marathon trials. I'm not ready to write him off or whatever just because he seems to be enjoying life a little bit more rn. Maybe that'll help him get the drive back (if it's gone).
Why did TAS even make this video? All he needs is a shot of ketones from what I recall
The best runner on my college team drank an monster energy drink before every workout and race. My brother ran low 28 for 10k and drank a Rockstar Energy drink (this was the best drink he said for performance)
