We've got universal basic income in all but name in the UK with universal credit and universal benefits.
Its tanked the economy and people are questioning why they go out to work to have the same standard of living as someone who has chosen never to work. Finding reliable employees willing to work full time in unskilled jobs for the minimum wage is very difficult - they all think they're entitled to be paid the same as skilled professionals. Wages are low for almost everyone and taxes are at a record high.
imprisonment is not an economic decision. If we have 13%ers out there ruining civil society, no amount of UBI will compensate for a backward, neolithic culture.
You see, I wouldn't have an issue if someone with an 80 IQ like myself could just put their head down like a mule and work an honest non-thinking 40-hour work week and be able to pay rent and afford enough food to maintain a BMI above 19. No drugs. No alcohol. No computer games. Just straight up food, shelter, and clean honest quiet living.
Not all of us have the mental apparatus to be a health professional or computer programmer. If you don't have the natural brain power to do certain jobs, you are sh*t out of luck in this society.

BS. Universal Credit is just the name of the UK benefit system, it's not a universal basic income.

The housing element covers ~80% of the median rent in your area so often you are still paying a substantial part of the rent out of the above payments.
Would the above rates cover 20% of your rent, energy bills and food?
The lottery provides exactly zero benefit to society, and government involvement is moral bankruptcy. ... Lotteries are simply a way for the government to shift funding from taxpayers to addicts and low information citizens.
How is stealing money from everyone moral and enticing dummies to voluntarily give you their money immoral?
People are living in cardboard boxes. I can't afford enough calories to bring my BMI above 18.9 and some person might win 1.35 billion dollars?
That money could be put to better use for society as universal basic income.
Well, a universal basic income takes money out of the public treasury (in fact massive amounts), while government-run gambling puts money into the treasury. The fact that this is done at the expense of the poor and working class really means nothing to the governments that administer the lottery.
That said, I think universal basic income is a bad idea. While done in the name of compassion, it would prompt a significant exodus from the labor force. We already have a problem with people, mostly young men, opting out of regular work. A UBI would make that problem far worse.
